Although Casarabonela is situated only some 35 minutes from Malaga airport it is a world away from the hustle and bustle of the mcoastal strip. Located on the fringes of the Sierra de las Nieves national park, the village is a haven of peace and tranquillity.

Yet because of a new road it is only 45 minutes from Marbella. Fuengirola, Toremolinos, and Benelmadena are all only 40 minutes away.

Casarabonela is ideally placed to explore this exiting area of Spain, only 2 hours away are the ski slopes of the Sierra Nevada, from the top of the ski slopes one can see the Mediterranean.

There are many walks in the countryside and it is possible to go horse riding paragliding, canoeing and mountain biking, all within ten or twenty minutes of Casarabonela.

The landscape changes magically through the year from the bright emerald greens of early spring, dotted with yellow wild flowers, into the ochre tints of late summer and winter. In January the almond blossom bursts into flower, and some hillsides look like they are covered in frost.

Casarabonela dates from Neolithic times, although the first major settlement was founded by the Romans called “Castra Vinaria” they were responsible for installing irrigation systems down from the mountains that are in part still in use today. The Romans occupied the Iberian peninsular for over 600 years and left many reminders of their stay.

The Moors were the next major inhabitants of Casarabonela they arrived in the year 712, they gave it the name “Qsar Bonaira” from which the present name is derived.

The Moors strengthened the old Roman fort, whose ruins stand above the village to this day. The village has many features of Moorish architecture, the winding streets and the squares and fountains. The moors were finally conquered by the Christian kings in 1492 and in 1574 King Phillip 11 granted full village status to Casarabonela.
